When Sensei Philip Allain (who has attained advanced Black Belts from Japan, Canada and the U.S.) established Blue Dragon Martial Arts more than 10 years ago, his dream was to build a multi-generational Karate school, where individuals and families alike could gather in a supportive environment to learn practical self-defence skills, enhanced by valuable advances in self-development.

Today, there are many parents-child student combinations each training in their own classes at both our locations. Often, adults have decided to join the action after watching the youngsters week after week – children love the fun of “out ranking” their parents for a change!

Sensei Philip Allain

Originally from Northern Ontario, Sensei Allain is a former police officer who has the field experience to understand the practical applications of what he teaches. After 15 years working as an undercover operator, plainclothes detective and uniformed patrol officer (where he also received in-service combat training from the OPP, RCMP and American law-enforcement agencies), Sensei retired to open Blue Dragon Martial Arts.

Before, during and after his time with the police, Sensei studied Martial Arts. Recognized as a member of the All Okinawa Karate-Do Federation (AOKF) and the National Association of Professional Martial Artists (NAPMA), he travelled to search out top teachers in Karate, Korean Taekwon-do, Hapki-do, Japanese Judo and Jiu-jitsu, Chinese Kung Fu, English REACT, Israeli Krav Maga, Canadian SPEAR and North American Boxing and Ghost Fist.

A natural-born teacher, Sensei Allain honed his skills delivering high school self-defence programs throughout the region, and as a busy bilingual supply teacher. He attended seminars and undertook extensive professional development to learn the best methods to run a school and teach students of all ages.

Today, he focuses full time on his students at Blue Dragon Martial Arts.

Our Dojo

(which simply refers to the place you learn Martial Arts)

Students currently have a choice of attending either of our convenient Oro-Medonte locations. Our classes are held at both Jarratt Hall on Horseshoe Valley Road (at the 10th Concession), and in the gym at Shanty Bay Public School (on the Ridge Road between Concessions 2 and 3).

We are working toward a permanent home for our school as the next step in the evolution of Blue Dragon Martial Arts. Our students are provided with regular updates on this project.

Our Philosophy

Our goal is to share “Authentic Karate”, which means the unfiltered self-defence techniques that were used for combat purposes in Okinawa (now part of Japan) prior to World War II. Consequently, we study the Goju-ryu style of Karate. Our focus is on the teachings of its founder Sensei Chojun Miyagi, and his student (and founder of the sub-style Meibukan Goju-ryu) Sensei Meitoku Yagi – the inspiration for the character Mr. Miyagi in the popular movie series The Karate Kid.

Because Sensei Allain believes true self defence is contrary to the goals of learning the rules of fighting for sport, Blue Dragon Martial Arts does not participate in tournaments.
